“Windows cannot find file” error message

Estimated reading time: < 1 min

When you double click on an Excel file, or on a RealData software icon on your desktop, Excel opens but you get an error message saying that Windows cannot locate the file.  You may also get an error message saying that there is an “error sending the message to the program”

This behavior is caused by an incorrect Excel setting. For further information, see Microsoft knowledge base article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3001579

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

In Microsoft Office Excel 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Excel Options.
Click Advanced, scroll down to the General section near the bottom of the window and then click to clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) check box.
Click OK.

This also affects Excel 2003 and earlier versions.
