Excel 2007 users receive error message about encrypted macros and antivirus software

Estimated reading time: 1 min

In Excel 2007, when you open a RealData workbook that was saved as an Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook (*.xlsm), you may see this message:

“Security Alert: This file contains encrypted macros that have been disabled because there is no antivirus software installed that can scan them. To run these macros, remove the encryption or permission restrictions on this file.”

UPDATE:  According to this Microsoft article, upgrading your install of Excel/Office 2007 to Service Pack 3 (SP3) will solve this problem.  To install Service Pack 3, run Windows Update.

There is no single solution to this problem, so contact us so that we can best assist you with this issue.

In short, the message means that your antivirus software cannot scan the encrypted macros in this file.  One way around this issue is to save the file as an Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls).

Another option is to upgrade your antivirus software to a product which is capable of scanning encrypted macros.  At this time, we can confirm that the AVG antivirus product is capable of doing this, but it is likely that other products do as well.
